Privacy Policy

1. Introduction and scope

Deshe is an app and website for Bangladeshis living abroad. It lets members place a dot on a world map to show where they live now and where their home district is in Bangladesh. Deshe is built and operated by Priyo (Priyo Inc.), referred to in this policy as “Deshe”, “we” or “us”.

This policy covers the Deshe mobile app and the website. In this policy, “personal information” means information that identifies you or that can reasonably be linked to you, and “member” means a person who has created a Deshe account.

This policy takes effect on 6 November 2026.

2. Information we collect in the app

We collect the following information in the app:

InformationRequired?What we use it for
Email addressYesCreating your account and signing you in, with Google or a one-time code sent to your email.
Home district and the city you live in nowYesPlacing your dot on the map and counting you in district and city rankings.
Home address and exact home pin; current address and exact current pinOptionalStored on your profile if you choose to add them. Never shown on the public map or rankings.
Name, date of birth, gender, profile photoOptionalYour profile. If you give your name, it and your profile photo can appear in the newest members list on the website (see What others can see).
Photos of your districtOptionalSubmitted for admin review. Other people see them only after approval.
Device tokenWhen you allow notificationsSending app notifications about news and events for your district or country.

3. Information we collect on the website

Visitors to Deshe are not asked to create an account. On the website:

  • Distance tool - It runs in your browser. We do not save the places a visitor picks.
  • Map searches - When you search for a place, the search text is sent to Google Maps to find matching places. Google’s own privacy policy applies to that search.
  • Visit counting - We count visits using a scrambled code made from the visitor’s IP address and browser. We never store the IP address itself, and we delete all of these codes every day.
  • Vercel Analytics - This counts page views and does not use cookies.

4. How we use your information

We use personal information only to run Deshe. Specifically, we use it to:

  • Create your account and sign you in with Google or a one-time code sent to your email;
  • Place your dot on the map and count you in district and city rankings;
  • Send notifications about news and events for your district or country;
  • Review, approve and display photos that members upload;
  • Keep Deshe safe, including logging when an admin views an exact pin and preventing misuse;
  • Understand how the website is used through the counts described in section 3.

Where the law requires a legal basis (for example, in the UK or EU), we rely on your consent for optional information and notifications, on providing the service you signed up for, and on our legitimate interest in running and securing Deshe and understanding how the website is used.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.

5. What others can see

The public map and rankings show only counts per city and district. They never show names, phone numbers, addresses, or exact pins, so no one can tell who you are from them.

The website’s home page also lists the 10 people who most recently joined the map, with the name they gave, their profile photo if they have one, the city and country they live in now, their home district, roughly how far that is from home (to the nearest 10 km) and how long ago they joined. Members who gave no name are not listed.

Visibility and admin access work as follows:

  • You can hide yourself from the map at any time. That also takes you off the newest members list.
  • Admins can see the member list, with phone numbers partly hidden.
  • Exact pins are visible to admins only. Every time an admin looks at one, we log it.
  • Photos you upload are seen by others only after an admin approves them (see section 6).

6. Photos you upload

Members can upload photos of their district. Admins review every photo before anyone else can see it, and they can remove a photo at any time. Approved photos may be shown in the app and on the website.

Photos you upload are tied to your account and are deleted if you delete your account (see section 10). Please upload only photos you took or have the right to share, and avoid photos that clearly show people who have not agreed to it.

7. How long we keep information

We keep your account information until you delete your account. Some data is deleted much sooner:

DataHow long we keep it
Account information and content (profile, location, photos, device token)Until you delete your account
Sign-in verification codes2 days
Used admin invite links30 days
Website visit codesDeleted every day
Nightly database backups14 days, then deleted

When you delete your account, we delete everything tied to it. Copies held in nightly backups disappear when those backups expire, within 14 days.

8. Your choices and rights

You have the following choices:

  • Delete your account - You can do this in the app at any time. It deletes everything tied to your account.
  • Hide yourself from the map - You can do this at any time without deleting your account.
  • Optional information - You can leave optional details blank, and you can update or remove them in the app.
  • Notifications - You can turn them off in your phone’s settings.
  • Your legal rights - Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct or delete your information, to object to or restrict how we use it, to withdraw consent, to receive a copy of it, and to complain to your local data protection authority. To use any of these rights, contact us using the details in section 14. We will reply within the time the law requires.

Withdrawing consent does not affect anything we did with your information before you withdrew it.

9. Security

We limit access to personal information to the admins who need it. Phone numbers are partly hidden in the admin member list, exact pins are visible to admins only, and every view of an exact pin is logged.

No system is completely secure, so please also protect your phone and your email account. If a breach affects your information, we will tell you and the authorities where the law requires.

10. Children

Deshe is for people aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you think a child has signed up, contact us and we will delete the account.

11. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we will update this page and the effective date. For significant changes, we will also tell members in the app.
